What’s the point of the Inner Tsone?

Dancers are pscyho-somatic-social beings. Yet dance training is often built around just the somatic part – learning technique and choreography, topped with maybe some physical training.

Dance teachers and choreographers often teach the way they were taught. They may also hold on to the same opinions of talent, motivation, and attitude as their teachers. And because teachers’ beliefs about their students’ potential is a major predictor of student outcomes, misguided beliefs are a problem! Not to even mention how many misguided beliefs dancers may have internalized about themselves.

I have personally been at the receiving end of this kind of beliefs and other biases. I have felt psychologically very unsafe during dance classes and events, and I have been completely misunderstood by teachers, who then haven’t been able to help me. And so, I find it really important that both dancers and especially dance teachers and choreographers understand some basic things about the mind.

I have also witnessed how loving, caring, and all in all wonderful dance and the dance community can be! Dance can be transformative and healing, and so I believe it is worth asking the question: how can we ensure that everyone gets to experience dance as fully as possible.

Combining dance and psychology

I am a psychologist with working experience both in clinical and academic settings. I have facilitated some workshops about dealing with various mental barriers but I always feel like time runs out and that I can only scratch the surface during those workshops. And so, I decided to start writing about it.

I want to help dancers struggling with mental barriers and dance teachers who feel helpless when their students get stuck. I want to create space for dancers who maybe feel like they can’t reach their goals, or perform on a high level. Because I believe that most likely, they can! They just need the right tools, resources, and perspectives. I also want to give motivated and ambitious dancers the opportunity to go even further on their path.

The Inner Tsone newsletter

I chose the newsletter format for a few reasons. I want to speak directly to people who really want to know about these things. Another important reason is that I have always been a thorough thinker and writer which is why the newsletter format serves me better than a social media page. Don’t worry – the newsletters won’t be too heavy and long, but I also don’t want to oversimplify complex issues and phenomena.
